The station’s name comes from the St Pancras neighbourhood which was inspired from the fourth-century Christian boy martyr Pancras of Rome.
Also known as London St Pancras, it is a central London railway terminus with Eurostar continental services. It also handles East Midlands Trains and high-speed trains to Kent. It is positioned between Regent’s Canal, the British Library and King’s Cross railway station. Designed by William Henry Barlow the station opened in 1868 and was famed for its architecture and it is now a Grade II listed building. By 1960 there was talk of the station being closed, since services had been diverted to King’s Cross and Euston, and the station was no longer needed. The demolition of such a landmark met with strong opposition, and in the late part of the 20th century, it was reinvented as the terminal of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, all part of an urban regeneration plan across East London.
At a cost of over £800 million, and a project length of six years, the complex was renovated and Queen Elizabeth II attended the grand opening in 2007. The restored station now has 15 platforms, a shopping centre and a coach facility. St Pancras has retained a reputation of being one of the most recognisable buildings of all the London termini and has been nicknamed the ‘cathedral of railways’. The station was only one of ten to be awarded five stars in Simon Jenkins Britain’s 100 best railway stations.
They needed washrooms to be rebuilt sympathetically with the original aesthetics while showcasing a modern interior once inside. They chose bright and clean interior designs, with washroom accessories all finished in stainless steel. Well-placed lights above the mirrors make applying make-up or checking appearance a breeze, and the design on the cubicles reflected in the mirrors subtly echoes the blur of a speeding train.
For their washrooms, they needed products that were hygienic and efficient to use due to the high volume of traffic. We supplied our DB400 panel-mounted electronic infrared tap, which helps reduce the risk of cross-contamination and spread of germs. They also used our BC2003-BM Dolphin high-speed, behind-mirror hand dryer which is interchangeable with paper towel dispenser if needed and easy to access from behind the mirror for maintenance. This makes for a more streamlined appearance in the washroom, as well as making the job of the facilities team easier.
They also used our BC194 panel mounted soap dispenser, designed for use in heavy traffic areas. This timeless design can be used with any standard liquid hand soap and anti-bacterial soap, and is particularly suitable for prestigious applications.
